SEND

To contact the SENCo - Dr Amy Healy

VISION

It is the department aim that all students identified with SEND will reach their full potential within their own personal, social development and academic/curriculum attainment.  This will enable students to function effectively within society and the work place preparing them for adulthood. In doing this they will develop resilience, confidence and aspirations ensuring long-term well-being. Within this process students and parents will remain the center of our practice and there will be regular consultation periods offered. Reasonable adjustments will be made where required and resources available within our mainstream school will be appropriately applied for student progress. The SENCO will provide support, advice and training to staff when needed and be accessible for students and parents to contact.

INTRODUCTION

Debenham High School is an inclusive school.  Special Needs pupils are placed in mixed ability form groups and the vast majority of their learning through their schooling takes place in mixed ability groupings.

In Year 7, students are placed in setted groups for English and Mathematics.  Broader ability streaming takes place in Year 8 for some MFL lessons and Year 9 for all Science provision.  All students start GCSEs in Science, Maths and English in Year 9.

Pupils who have been identified at primary school and by test statistics as requiring extra support in English or Maths are taught in small groups in these subjects.

The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) teaches and advises staff on teaching and learning for Special Needs pupils, supported by a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.  The school also employs a number of Teaching Assistants who support students within mainstream lessons.
